CrashPlan was purchased to fill the gap with two file servers, that only backed up weekly. We have added CrashPlan to ensure that business critical data is replicated to the cloud, and has a suitable retention period to ensure that we're able to recover key files for as long as we need them.
  • Easy to setup
  • Clear pricing structure
  • Secure web management portal
  • Backup speeds are a little slow
  • Recovery of large numbers of files can be a little hard
CrashPlan is the perfect solution for small / medium sized businesses that require a cloud backup solution for key files. We have found that it's been great in that scenario, the issues come if you have too larger a selection of data, or any specific security requirements, that aren't built into the product by default.

I use CrashPlan as a cloud backup solution for my business.
  • The data is encrypted in transit using a custom encryption key
  • CrashPlan allows for inexpensive unlimited storage
  • It allows you to configure the number of versions of a file that you'd like to keep
  • CrashPlan provides limited access to downloading your data. To restore even small amounts of data you need to request that they send you your data using a hard drive. This is terribly inconvenient. I've read that you might be able to adjust this setting, but I have not located that setting.
  • On one or two occasions I've had to re-install the software as I was getting errors regarding the UI being able to connect to the service.
Overall, for the price of the service and the amount of data that you can backup, I think the service is great. It provides peace of mind knowing that my data is stored securely in the cloud.

I use CrashPlan to constantly backup updated and new files on our backup server, for redundancy. I needed something to add to my backup plan that would present another offsite option that was not tied to my geographic area, and that was also file-oriented as opposed to snapshot-driven.
  • Constantly monitors our backup server for any file changes.
  • Super-easy monitoring control panel for allowing selections to be added.
  • Allows for backup of mapped drives.
  • Remote management tool other than web interface.
For a very simple off-site backup of files, CrashPlan works really well for us. I can't remember the last time it had an issue running in the background. Basically, I run most of our file backups to the server the app resides on. When those files are backed up to that location, CrashPlan backs up those files to the cloud. Super easy to retrieve anything or any dated version of a file.

CrashPlan is used by a number of my clients to back up workstations, servers and NAS devices to the cloud. Most clients use CrashPlan to backup just mission critical machines, though some use it to back up all workstations. With CrashPlan set up properly, backups occur automatically every 15 min or when a file changes with no user intervention, allowing for peace of mind when it comes to protecting one's data.
  • CrashPlan is an extremely powerful and flexible backup program with multiple options of what files to backup, how often to back them up, how much CPU should be used during backup operations (both when a user is present and away), how much bandwidth should be used during backup (again both while a user is present and away), and a multitude of other options.
  • Unlike a number of other cloud-based backup services, CrashPlan can backup network drives (such as those from a Synology NAS) - this makes setting up a backup system a lot more simple and cost-effective, as you can connect multiple network drives to a single computer - and backup both that computer and the attached network drives.
  • CrashPlan keeps your backup history indefinitely. This means that if you delete a file, a year goes by, and you need to recover that file, you can use CrashPlan to do that. Most other cloud-based backup services only keep history for around 30 days before deleting them from the backup archive.
  • Another powerful feature, CrashPlan allows you to not only back up to the CrashPlan Central cloud, but also to an external drive or network drive. Essentially, you can use CrashPlan as an all-in-one backup solution for both local and cloud backups. The local backups are heavily compressed with data deduplication to save space on the backup destination, thus allowing you to keep a long history of backups.
  • The cloud-based backups can be heavily encrypted with a custom made encryption key that even CrashPlan can't recover.
  • The CrashPlan program installed on your computer is Java-based vs. a native application. While this makes development for CrashPlan easier, there are a lot of drawbacks to Java programs including more resources usage, less stability, and overall more clunky interface.
  • While this was also in the Pros category - CrashPlan is an extremely powerful and flexible program, which adds a great deal of complexity. Setting up CrashPlan isn't always a simple procedure, and depending on the complexity of your backup set, can take a while to tinker around with the settings to get everything to work properly.
  • The CrashPlan desktop program consists of a Java program front end, as well as a backend service - there are times when the backend service will crash, and the front end Java program will refuse to load. Typically, restarting the service or restarting the computer will resolve the issue, but sometimes more in-depth troubleshooting is required.
  • Perhaps one of the biggest downsides to CrashPlan is its price - at $10/month/computer CrashPlan is more than double the price of some existing backup services such as Backblaze (priced at $50/year/computer). To add salt to the wound, about a year and a half ago, CrashPlan discontinued their consumer options - which were very reasonably priced at $60/year for a single computer or a family plan priced at $150/year for up to 10 computers. When these options were discontinued, the cost of backing up with CrashPlan was effectively doubled for the same feature set.
  • Along with the previous example, CrashPlan had the option to back up to a remote machine on a different network with a free Crashplan account. This option was eliminated when the consumer line of services were discontinued.
  • While the backup service provided by CrashPlan are still first in class, the above two controversial changes have broken some trust between CrashPlan and its clients.
CrashPlan is a very powerful and flexible online backup solution. The fact that it can backup network drives and back up to multiple locations is a feature not found in most competing solutions. In addition, CrashPlan's encryption is best in class, with the ability to create long and complex encryption keys that even CrashPlan can't recover. Finally, CrashPlan keeps your backup archives indefinitely, which can be an invaluable resource for businesses large and small. Unfortunately, CrashPlan is priced on the higher end compared to other solutions ($10/month/computer vs $50-$60/year/computer for competing services such as Backblaze). In addition, when CrashPlan discontinued their popular consumer line of backup services, a breach of trust with the company was created that has not been fully healed.

Capriccio Elite, LLC currently uses Code42 to back up all files across all workstations in our agency. This includes sensitive information housed on local computers and our internal file server as well as QuickBooks files. As a stand-alone, the back-ups are reliable. We choose to use Code42 as part of a daisy chain of backups. Meaning, local computers backed up to a NAS and Code42 and NAS backed up to Code42. This more than adequately solves our need to have and access back-ups of files and documents. Furthermore, if a file is deleted locally, it is easy to find and restore from the Code42 console.
  • Code42 really does a very good job of backing up files. The integrity of the files remains good so long as the file was not corrupt to begin with.
  • The with proper setup, managers and users can be alerted based on a scheme set by the user when the work-station has not been backed up for a specified amount of time. We use the default of 3 days for warnings and 5 for critical back-ups.
  • Backups can be scheduled to run during times when internet traffic is high. Meaning, if the user has a low connection, running backups in the background can slow the processes. The ability to choose time to backup is very helpful in these situations.
  • The User Dashboard is user-friendly meaning that once the user logs in, the tabs and options are relatively self-explanatory.
  • Code42 allows the user to choose what files to back-up. This is quite useful as many of the files on a system (such as app data) take up room and speed given the changes within these files make through the day.
  • 2-factor authentication is available as well as users/admin archive key password or custom key.
  • When set up to initiate a backup every time a change is made, the likelihood of "losing" a file is minimized.
  • The login for Code42 still lets you get through to the backups however, one cannot make any adjustments. One must now use the login located at www.crashplanpro.com. I have been frustrated about why I could not see my bills, add licenses, etc by not having this information. It would be helpful to put a re-director for those accustomed to using the old login site.
  • History logs for devices have never worked. The workaround is to go into the device to review the logs. Logs are important when trying to figure out which file threw an error when backing up and why.
  • Not much has changed in online/offline indicators and moving files to a new computer. On the surface, it seems simple but it usually takes 2 or 3 reinstall attempts to get Code42 to recognize the new computer. For example, the backup shows current but is offline.
Code 42 is best suited to backup local files on computers including mission-critical files where encryption, access, and security. Redundancy is possible with layers of extra security if needed. Anyone who keeps their photos or other personal information on a computer will greatly appreciate this. Removable media is unfortunately not always reliable. It works well in the cloud environment. It will also backup One Drive files! Probably the best feature is the unlimited backup space for files. Code42 does not do system image backups. This can be a problem in a business environment where restoring operating systems of workstations, files servers, and on-premises servers is a need.

Code42 backs up my home computer and business server. It will backup files almost by the minute. It will also back up large amount of data both to the cloud and internal storage.
  • Backup does a nice job behind the scenes and you don't even know it's running
  • Will send email updates and alerts you of any known issues.
  • Backup capabilities to both the server and local drive
  • Unlimited data backup is the major strength for Code42
  • Always need to make a checkmark if you want to see old deleted files - Sometimes tedious if you forget to mark this.
  • Unable to download multiple versions of the same file. If you have a file with 3 different time stamps, Code42 will only download the latest version - Thus, if you needed to down load all different versions to see which is the correct one, you have to download them separately.
  • Although Code42 will work on 2012 Windows Server, it is not technically supported and phone support for troubleshooting is limited
This is a very affordable option. Some previous backup companies will charge you for additional storage and do not offer unlimited storage. This unlimited is needed for a fair price in order to save large photos and videos.

We use Code42 for cloud/offsite backups across our firm. It's inexpensive, easy to use and a great way to backup data offsite.
  • Cost effective
  • Easy to implement
  • Simple to Use
  • Does not allow you to backup data to a local file repository.
  • Backup speed varies.
  • Depending on how much data there is, it doesn't always complete a backup in one backup session.
Code42 really works great if you aren't working with extremely large file sizes and are looking for a cloud backup solution. It's straightforward to implement and is very affordable. For smaller offices, backups are completed in a timely manner and are easier to migrate should you ever need to change servers. Support is available via phone or chat, which I like. For companies dealing with larger amounts of data (100s of GB), you may want to consider partnering Code42 with another product that allows data to be backed up locally. This would also allow flexibility in restoring data back onsite at a faster rate rather than waiting for large data files to be restored via the WAN. This is a consideration for any cloud backup solution, not just specific to Code42.

Code42 provides a secure, cloud-based and on-premises backup solution for workstations, laptops, and servers. I am a user and a reseller with about 100 end users in various organizations. It is a low-profile and low-impact installation, easy to configure, and seamlessly and continuously backs up files, providing secure off-site backup with versioning and increments- allowing you to go back to pristine file versions in the case of ransomware. It protects against unintended deletes and lost or damaged computers, virus or other malware infections, and allows a company administrator access to archives in the case of legal or HR needs.
  • Protects against ransomware- in a worst-case scenario, you can retrieve all the files in the condition they were in before the attack.
  • Good interface- easy for users to restore their own files in case of an inadvertent deletion.
  • Highly configurable to manage bandwidth and local resources.
  • Can back up to the Code42 cloud and local storage devices.
  • Would like to see a way for company admins to lock a user out of their archive to prevent deletion for HR or legal reasons
I use Code42 personally and resell to businesses with as few as two users. One business with 20 users has been a ransomware victim twice and we have recovered everything, files to databases, perfectly. I back up desktops, laptops, and servers, and use it for everything from inadvertent deletes to hardware failures. Backup is important but restores are critical, and the ability to see versions and intact archives and deleted files are well suited to any business that uses a computer. It's offsite and secure and runs in the background without consuming computer or bandwidth resources. I cannot think of any personal or business computer that doesn't need backing up, and off-site, encrypted, and secure archives that run without user intervention that not only allow restores but restoring from earlier versions is important for any scenario.

Code42 is the one and only system I use to backup my entire business in a digital sense. I am a freelance professional photographer, so I backup my images, documents, emails, etc., on a regular basis. Having a good backup system in place is crucial as hard drives fail all the time and my clients count on me to retain their products.
  • Code42 is the most affordable backup system offering unlimited storage that I could find. I came from SOS Online Backup, which I ultimately decided to drop after my monthly rate for their unlimited plan increased by 20x.
  • With Code42's unlimited storage option, I don't have to worry about the fact that my backups are significant in space. As a photographer with thousands of images at stake, I need to run large backups often.
  • Code42 runs continuously and silently in the background of my desktop computer. It is truly "set and go", so I don't have to think about it when I'm away. It runs until the designated drive has been fully backed up to my cloud storage. It will then automatically email me once the backup is complete (or, it will email me if it encounters any errors).
  • Customer service is above par. Anytime I need help, a chat agent is available (chat is my communication preference), they are always friendly, and go above and beyond to resolve my needs.
  • Code42's desktop client was recently changed; the interface is different and, I feel, it has been simplified too much. I found myself looking for controls that are no longer there. For some, this might be a plus, but I liked to have more control and see more details of my backup.
  • When recovering files (in my case, this is most frequently images), you see files as files - I am not able to see a preview of an image. So I have to know the exact file name/number I am looking for.
  • Code42 discontinued their mobile app. In 2019, I can hardly believe this. I used the app on a regular basis, to access files while I was on the go.
  • The Code42 software is a bit of a memory hog, although this isn't a major complaint from me since I have a computer designated to only sit and run backups, and do nothing else.
Code42 is great for individuals or small businesses who want to run large/unlimited backups at a low cost. The price coupled with great customer service make this a company I hope to stick with for a very long time. Be prepared for large backups to take a good deal of time to complete (though this will also vary dependent on your internet connection). If you find the desktop client to be underwhelming or confusing, just chat with an agent to resolve your issue.

This is being used to backup our important users (President, CFO, Head Account, Head Sales person, etc), any user that would cause major problems for the company if they were hit with Ransomware or the like are protected. I've used this to restore a user when they receive new computers or a single file needs to be restored (or a few files).
  • Backup - this software does a great job at backup.
  • Runs in the background and doesn't cause any issues.
  • Alerting is excellent and on point.
  • Restore process is a little convoluted - once you understand it, it is pretty easy to use, but it can be hard to figure out the first time. Support is very helpful in this regard.
  • While it does do versioning, it can miss a few hours of time (up to 24 I've discovered), but even then, better a few hours then an entire system.
Backup and recovery of end-user computers - this product is a perfect compliment to your backup solution for your server/network backups. This will protect your users for a reasonable price with very little interference on your part. 'Install it and forget it' - once it in and running there really is nothing you need to do.

We are using Crashplan Pro on one device. We backup to several destinations including the Code42 cloud. We are using Crashplan to backup data because we were not satisfied with the speed, versions, and reliability of backing up to tape.
  • Crashplan just runs quietly. It doesn't need much attention once configured properly.
  • I really like that I can go back to virtually any point in time and restore a file or group of files.
  • Crashplan deduplicates so you can have multiple versions of your files without taking much more disk space.
  • It is very easy and fast to restore files.
  • They are constantly updating Crashplan, They have already addressed areas that I was unhappy with. I don't have any current complaints.
Almost anywhere that you want continuous backups. You wouldn't be able to backup a live database like Exchange. If you dump your database, you can back that up. I don't believe you would be able to restore a single email for instance. For backing up non database files, Crashplan is awesome.

We are currently using CrashPlan to back up all of our remote users. The reason behind bringing on CrashPlan was that we needed a method to accurately back up and have access to data from our remote associates in the event of litigation. We soon found out that we could use CrashPlan to help us refresh the hardware for all 150 of our sales associates. We built the hardware in house, installed their most recent backup and then shipped out the new hardware. When they powered on their new system, it was identical to their previous solution. Complete with documents, email archives, desktop icons and IE favorites. We have not yet encountered any real problems. The closest thing to a problem is accessing the cold storage files. It is a bit clunky.
  • The ease of installation and deployment could not have been easier. The hardest part was getting our sales associates to actually click a link!
  • The back up is complete and transparent to the end user. Very hands off!
  • The admin portal is very user friendly. I can quickly determine who has recently backed up and those who have gone some time without an active backup.
  • As I mentioned previously, the file access in cold storage is a bit clunky. I would think that if I had admin rights I should be able to recover files from there relatively easily. But that is not the case.
  • I would like to see them have a different license tier for accounts in cold storage. The data there is not being manipulated, it is sitting stagnant and we are paying the same licensing as if it were an active backup.
CrashPlan is well suited for any size company. The license structure is such that you can easily add licenses as needed. We started out with our executive team and easily migrated to our entire remote associates. Very seamless and transparent. If someone is looking for a backup solution that is easy to use, easy to deploy and easy to administer, CrashPlan is perfect!

CrashPlan is being used as a disaster recovery/data backup tool in our organization. It is being deployed to the entire company of ~6000 users. CrashPlan addresses several business needs as it is a very versatile application. The help desk primarily uses it for disaster recovery when drives fail or end users accidentally delete a file. We also use it for hardware refreshes where pulling data from CrashPlan would be much quicker than USMT. Lastly, we use it for legal holds and data forensics.
  • It has a very easy to use UI so end users will have no problem understanding and using the application.
  • It is not intrusive at all in terms of system resource consumption and you will hardly notice it is running in the background.
  • Administration is extremely easy with the web console and allows you to push any changes to specific organizations or to the company as a whole.
  • The support staff and website documentation for issues or processes are very detailed and easy to understand.
  • Currently CrashPlan seems to be rolling out a lot of updates in very short time intervals. Given our change management processes, it is difficult to keep up with the latest and greatest releases.
CrashPlan is well suited in small or large environments that require users to maintain a backup or if the company doesn't allow backing up to external storage devices due to security reasons. There's really no reason a person shouldn't be using CrashPlan as the application is very lightweight and it gives users peace of mind knowing that their data is safe.

We have 15 local users and 35 remote users. I set up a parent and two sub organizations. The subs were set not to inherit the parent settings so I could control who could make changes to the settings. The remote users are locked down so we can be compliant with regulations about data archiving and retention. Remote users can not delete from backups and backups are set for unlimited retention. The backup is set to run continuously. The only issue we have had was with a user that has a satellite internet connection with limited or capped data. The first backup used most of her data allotment for the month. Users had to be educated to leave their computer on while the first backup was running.
  • After the install the user doesn't have to do anything. Our remote users were used to having to copy data to an external drive for archiving. Which meant it usually wasn't done. The central office didn't have access to any of those files either.
  • I am able to monitor which users are backed up and contact those that appear to be having issues.
  • Since the install package exceeded the attachment size allowed with our email client I included an HTML link to the location of the download.
  • The install took less than 10 minutes including the download of the software. Our documentation included screen shots of what the user should expect to see. This allowed remote users to install without having central IT get involved.
  • The management website times out frequently requiring a re-login.
  • Some of the information reported isn't consistent. Because each user can have multiple devices the number of devices doesn't match user number.
  • The number of users is the number of accounts that you have set up. Not the number of active users.
  • Some of the settings report inaccurately when first entering the screen. Refreshing the screen will update the settings. The help desk is aware of the problem and they are working to resolve the issue.
CrashPlan is great where you have remote or inexperienced users. It is a set and forget application. It just works.

CrashPlan was selected for our company to support a highly mobile user base. With a fast-growing company and lots of data being accessed, shared, and relied upon to do a job effectively, it is critical that we back up that data - and not by relying on users to understand when and where to save.

CrashPlan took the human error out of our backup plan. It guarantees data integrity, and our ability to service our users for a variety of needs. As an administrator, it gives me peace of mind that lost or stolen devices do not mean a loss of data. CryptoLockers don't scare me - now it's simply a matter of blowing away a machine and re-imaging with our CrashPlan backups. Accidentally deleted files can be restored in seconds, and if a user loses it somewhere in their mess of digital files, I can find it.

  • Device Refresh/Restore.
  • File Recovery.
  • Non-intrusive backups (no file sync!).
  • Administrative Portal.
  • File search across whole organization - a real loss of potential for expanding as a DLP product.
  • Deployment. It's doable, but it's not as easy as it should be.
CrashPlan is great for any organization that is looking for a lightweight, but not light in feature, backup solution. There is no file sync, and there are lots of opportunity for visibility into what is being stored and where. Device refresh and restore is a breeze, and helpful in a time where Microsoft has left their Windows Easy Transfer tool in the dust for transitioning machines from Windows 7 to 10. CrashPlan is NOT a DLP tool, but has the potential to be. It's a little disappointing to have a tool that gives some insight, but not all of it.

For decades my company has used onsite usb backups for small businesses. With any onsite backup, you want the security and protection of an external drive that is shielded. The problem is most of them fail within a month of warranty, and usually quite unexpectedly.

Code42 and Crashplan:

- A solution that does not care about size.
- It takes our onsite backups to cloud, and gives us piece of mind for our Managed Service clients.
- It is the best hybrid solution I have seen, to date. No huge metadata files that cause issues.
- Customer support that works

Biggest things that need work:

- Backing up open databases and exchange. Would be nice if the tool was built in.
- Agents that quit unexpectedly. This happens randomly. Usually a fresh install will fix.
  • Unlimited backup
  • Restoring small files to phone when necessary
  • Gives small companies a tool to protect everything, at reasonable cost
  • User Interface needs help
  • Agent sometimes stops
  • Needs to backup exchange better
  • Needs to backup SQL better
A large enterprise network needs to make sure it can backup open databases.

It's a really great solution for computer backup on either cloud or hybrid solution. I can sleep easier because even if there a virus or hardware failure, my users will not lose any data. If a file is deleted or a bad change is made to it, my user can revert it themselves. The self service nature of crashplan is great.
  • When the deployment is finished, you can forget about until you need it.
  • The fact that the user can recover the data themselves is also a time saver.
  • It's also a great protection againt ransomware.
  • The Bandwidth management is also great.
  • The backups are encrypted.
  • My users can recover data themselves.
  • The client uses a lot of memory. For this kind of app it's essential to have a low memory footprint.
  • A lot of small files can make the app behave slowly.
  • The de-duplication could be improved. It's better on Windows 2012 R2.
I believe that crashplan is really good on a normal computer. It may be less [suited] on our developers' computer as they don't play with the settings because they have a lot of small files. We tried it on a few servers and our tests were not conclusive.

It's very well suited for the computers of our sales and marketing teams who travel a lot.

Crashplan is used for file level backups for my clients that need more than 500GB backed up to the cloud.
  • Simple to set up.
  • Easy to see what is being backed up.
  • The service is extremely fast on the initial backup.
  • A clearer understanding of the different services would be helpful.
  • A more modern (clearer) user interface.
  • Linux support.
Crashplan is well suited for companies that have a lot of data to backup to the cloud.

We utilize Crashplan to backup training records and file shares related to the course materials and research we have performed. Our office was previously located in an area prone to hurricanes and flooding, so we have experienced disasters and loss of data. Crashplan was implemented as a simple, cost-effective way to ensure that wherever we were located, our data was located somewhere else as protection, and it has done the job splendidly.
  • Crashplan is simple to configure and starts working right away. No need to go through extensive setup to get it going, once the backup app is installed, off it goes.
  • Backing up network shares is as simple as pointing the Crashplan backup app to the drive and letting it go. It's fast and easy to configure.
  • Crashplan will do backups as often as every 15 minutes if you want, which provides extra coverage against ransomware and viruses. Restores are simple and easy and can be done from the same app that is installed to perform the backups.
  • I don't really have any cons, this is what a backup program should be.
We're a small office of eight people and for us, it is ideal. It's simple enough to configure without requiring outside assistance, yet powerful enough to do the job of backup systems that cost way more.

We are currently using CashPlan across the company. It will solve all the problems with hard drive failures, virus [detection] and will make the process easier for users who are getting a computer replacement since we will just need to re-download the data that has been already backed up.
  • Backs up silently
  • Doesn't take too much computer resources to run, making it run really smooth
  • User interface is really simple and easy to use
  • The text color use in the user interface log in screen could be changed to a dark black instead of grey, making it easier for users to read it.
When rebuilding a new machine, CrashPlan makes it easy to re-download the data onto the newly imaged machine.

I've used CrashPlan PROe (private cloud server with standard CrashPlan client) for three years, in multiple small business settings. At my current workplace, we've been using it since November 2015, on all our workstations and servers, to provide continuous backup to a dedicated Debian Linux backup server in a separate building, equipped with a ZFS zraid array.
  • Detailed backup control from a central administrative interface.
  • Continuous backup with granular control of CPU and bandwidth use.
  • True cross-platform support for OS X, Linux and Windows.
  • Architectural flexibility, including endpoint-to-server conversion, transparent server load balancing and redundancy, and simple storage archive import and migration.
  • Trivial installation and setup for both client and server.
  • Private cloud server is no longer available in a license package which supports businesses requiring fewer than 25 licenses.
  • Public cloud option remaining to small business is not a good fit for creative businesses generating gigabytes of new content per day.
  • Web console is not compatible with desktop Safari, and has issues with mobile Safari as well.
I would recommend CrashPlan PROe for any size business. It's eminently scalable, but it's also a perfect fit for smaller businesses which generate substantial data files, and those on slower broadband connections making offsite cloud backup a poor fit. (Sadly, it is no longer an option for most small businesses—see my earlier comments about licensing.)

We utilize CrashPlan as a data/disaster recovery tool. It has proven its effectiveness time and time again, with minimal work input. We use and manage it within the Information Systems department, but we have deployed the agent to multiple workstations, servers, and more to maintain data integrity. The most important problem it addresses in my opinion is data recovery in dire situations. The beauty of it is how simplistic it is, and I prefer that. With just a few simple steps, you can recover any data designated to be backed up within no time, and this is a major plus for me, as downtime within a medical facility sends staff into "panic-mode."
  • The ease of use. There is no intense set up to get CrashPlan into action.
  • Simplistic UI. I, for one, hate overwhelming UIs with poor organization structure. CrashPlan addresses this with a simplistic UI that is descriptive and easy to use.
  • Data recovery. It's fast. And speed in that situation is important to reduce downtime.
  • More transparency within their tech model and where they are going/what they are doing. I will add, however, I have not been seeking this out so it may already exist.
Any and every cryptolock scenario is a good start.

We used CrashPlan to backup the mobile computer of the travelling employees. We don't use it much anymore because of the Google Drive and Dropbox synchronization tools. It isn't for a specific department, but for a specific needs. For the local employees, it's easy to save on a local intranet or DFS, but when you work on the road, you want to work locally.
  • It is multi platform. You can't be Windows or Mac only anymore, every employees should choose their best tools.
  • It's easy to use. Anyone can log on and restore files.
  • It's pretty advanced. Schedule, encryption, bandwidth, selections!
  • It's pretty expensive.
I think CrashPlan will fit all scenarios since the configuration is very granular. You can configure multiple destinations, and receive backups of other computer. What does that mean? You don't need a large server to store the backup, you can backup peer-to-peer and optimize your computer drives. There are no additional costs for the storage.

We utilize Crashplan to backup anything and everything deemed non-critical. It's non-critical in that our Crashplan install is only for on-site storage, we have a different system that pushes critical backups offsite. We used to have to decide whether or not the data on a machine was worth backing up and if so, allocate a quantity of storage on a backup appliance, or a backup license, or determine if we needed to pay for cloud storage space, etc. With our on-premise Crashplan install utilizing our own storage, there's no more decision making involved - does it have data that should be backed up? Back it up. It's simple, fast, and best of all, restores are almost fun. I have three backup systems in use in my org depending on the data type: critical (onsite + cloud offsite), non-critical (onsite only), and virtual (onsite + cloud offsite). Crashplan is by far my favorite and most widely deployed.
  • Makes backups a breeze - you can either install the agent and define all the settings yourself, which takes 2-3 minutes, or set the defaults on the server and let it configure the agent, which takes all of 1 minute. Everything is right up front and configured in a way that makes sense.
  • Restores are amazing. Three clicks to pick your data to be restored, timeframe, and restore location (original location or a new folder), and off it does. This is the simplest program I've ever seen and it does exactly what it is designed to do.
  • Licensing is straight-forward and based on number of users. We have an on-premise system so we only pay for user licenses, no per-TB or per-appliance fees. Annual support is part of the license cost, so no extra maintenance there either.
  • The only thing I'd like to see changed is the admin console looks drastically different from the agent console. Otherwise this is a solid system all-around.
Adding a cloud-provider is a bit confusing - the functionality is there, but it doesn't seem to be well documented. If you just need on-premise storage, then this isn't an issue and Crashplan is amazing. We did have an issue where our storage location was on a NAS and Crashplan wouldn't backup to a network share, so we re-mapped the store as an iSCSI drive and Crashplan didn't have any issues after that.

Our volunteers work in 84 countries around the globe with the main purpose of securing our corporate data. One of the challenges we found out during the implementation of CrashPlan PROe was that many of our people have personal and business data all mixed up. Now we allow them to backup personal data too but knowing that we might access that data in case of need.
  • Easy to install on any platform (Linux, MacOX, Windows).
  • Takes off workload from IT personnel by empowering final users in the management of their data.
  • Reports sent to the final user and their supervisors keep us aware on how well we are doing in securing our data.
  • Adopting a computer is still a confusing process for some of us.
  • I visited the documentation support site and things like restoring [data] from an external hard drive without an internet connection is hard to find. Maybe work a more little on the key wordpart to make it easy for us to find things.
With members spread around the globe having a tool that helps me to keep our corporate data secure without involving our members is priceless.
